The Day After

We are having a succession of events that could resemble a news headline with the title, “The Day After” - The Day After 9/11 - The Day After Paris - The Day After San Bernardino - The Day After Dallas and now, The Day After Nice. Each act of terror and violence puts us in a new and uncomfortable place called “The Day After.” In that place we have a choice to make.

These acts of terror may be sourced in a perceived injustice or motivated by a particular worldview, but at their core they are instigated by demonic powers in high places. Human brokenness is only the vehicle that transports their evil action onto the streets of our cities. The ultimate plan in these expressions of hell is not the submission of a culture, but its ability to blind us to the increasing glory of God that is being poured out upon the Earth. The depressing “Day After” mentality can begin programming the Church to believe a greater measure of God’s glory is nowhere to be found. From within that dark view of life we begin to create equally dark doctrines and theologies to express what we are feeling. That is the greatest act of terrorism.

We think of the Spirit realm as up or down, but really it is all around us just beyond the veil. It is like we are walking along parallel hallways divided only by a sheer veil separating the two realms. With the increased exposure to acts of terror and other social trauma, I have sensed a thinning of this veil. The realities of the spiritual realm will continue to press through the veil into this realm while some continue to hold onto a naïve understanding of the spiritual realities of this life.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” II Corinthians 3:17-18

The day after a great sorrow takes place, the ever-increasing glory of God continues to be released upon the Earth unhindered by evil. As more “Day After” experiences take place do not lose heart.  Look up and contemplate the Lord’s glory. The purest act of your faith is choosing to see His goodness. Ask God to remove the blinders placed on your eyes by the constant drumbeat of a fear-based worldview. As the veil continues to thin and you choose to look for the glory and goodness of God your act of faith will begin to change how you will live when the next Day After pays a painful visit. That will be the greatest victory over any act of terror.
